Cooking Outdoors: From Barbecue to Hiking

Food Tastes So Much Better . . .

There’s no surer sign that summer is on the way than dusting down the barbecue from the back of the garage, washing last years grease from your barbecue tongs and proceeding to burn your very first hamburger of the season! Black on the outside, pink in the middle, of course it’s ready!  Okay, that’s a little unfair, and it doesn’t really matter because all will agree with me when I say . . . food tastes so much better outdoors. There are various scientific reasons for this:

  • Dad thinks the food tastes so much better because he was in charge (allegedly)!
  • Mom thinks the food tastes so much better because she had the afternoon off (after the shopping and preparation that is, although Dad does the cooking Mom still does everything else and cleans up afterwards).
  • Kids think the food tastes so much better because they can eat it in the garden with dirty hands and don’t have to sit at the table.
  • Everyone else thinks the food tastes so much better because after all of that fresh air and exercise, they would think that a buttered house brick tasted good!

You can cook some great tasting food on the barbecue, some cookery writers have made a very good living out of telling us how to make sticky ribs and an idiot proof marinade to stop your chicken from drying out, so let’s look a little closer at the ancient art of out door cooking, from the humble barbecue to preparing some tasty food whilst out hiking. Now there’s a challenge.

Hey, that actually looked quite good for a first attempt. Pity we don’t have “smellavision” . . . I believe it’s on its way!
