Apple Pie - is any pudding more “American” than apple pie. Well, although we all love it, you’ll be surprised to hear that everybody has their own ideas about what makes “the perfect apple pie”, just like they do about “the perfect trifle”.

Who makes the best apple pie in the world? I’ll put money on it being your Mother, Grandmother, Great Aunt Clara . .  the ones you remember from childhood all hot, sweet, sticky and delicious servied with a huge dollop of ice-cream, whipped cream, custard . . . it’s enough to make you drool from the corners of your mouth.

Well, here’s one recipe for American Apple Pie which you might like to try, and if you do try it and like it then all well and good, if you try and don’t like it then it will be blatantly obvious that you are incapable of following simple instructions. It’s delicious . . . where did you go wrong?

American Apple Pie – Stuff You’ll Need

  • Apples – peeled, cored and sliced. Around 7 1/2 cups should do the trick.
  • Light Brown Sugar – you should only need 1/3 of a cup if you have lovely sweet apples.
  • White Sugar – again, 1/3 of a cup should be plenty.
  • All-purpose flour – 1 tablespoon.
  • Lemon Juice – very important (stops the apples for discoloring) but you’ll only need a teaspoon.
  • Ground Cinnamon – you can’t make a proper apple pie without cinnamon, about 1/3 teaspoon.
  • Raisins – add that little extra something. Only 1 cup can make all the difference.
  • Pastry – you’re sure to have your own favorite (and if you don’t then buy some of the frozen stuff). Make sure that you have enough for a 9 inch double pie crust.
  • Egg – just the one!

American Apple Pie – How To Do It

  • Don’t forget to turn the oven on and pre-heat it to 220 degrees C / 425 degrees F.
  • Spray a deep dish pie plate with some cooking spray (sorry, forgot to put that in the list of stuff you’ll need, but you only need a quick spray so it doesn’t really count).
  • Mix the sugar (white and brown), flour, cinnamon, lemon then add to the apples and raisins. Keep on stirring until the fruit is coated with the lovely sweet mixture (oh, I’m getting into the swing of this now).
  • Roll out your pie crust and line the dish, spoon your apple mixture into the pie dish and then put the rest of the pie crust over the top. Beat up the egg and glaze the top of the pie with it, and sprinkle with a little sugar.  Don’t forget to cut a couple blow holes to let the steam out!
  • Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until it’s that lovely golden brown color.

Give your pie the chance to cool down a little or you’ll definitely burn your tongue on the apples, and eat as soon as you dare.

There are a couple of videos for you to check out how other people recommend that you make your All American Apple Pie . . . they’re all different yet they’re all basically the same . . . delicious!

Did you see that? He put butter on his apples, interesting . . . also, in case you were wondering he said that he’s a “naturalist”, not a ”naturist” . . he’s not the Naked Chef, that’s Jamie Oliver!

Thanks for that Betty! Great stuff . . .  Do you always take a bite of whatever Rick has? Poor Rick.

Isn’t that a fantastic video, with or without the pie I just love it! Absolutely terrific.
